1980-2010 and Counting
-AHSU's mission-is to continue to support CN® Certified Nutritionists-
the Health Knowledge Professionals of the 21st Century

Together, we have gone further than most could ever dream because we believed we could and we are working at achieving the next phase of what was called the impossible to make it Possible. After 30 years, the “Health Knowledge Profession” has become a reality led by you, the CN™ Certified Nutritionists.

The 20 Century’s “CN™ Certified Nutritionist advanced into the 21st Century as the Health Knowledge Practitioner of the future. Your efforts have: 1. Enhanced health knowledge that has been continuously derived from combined studies of the broad concepts of nutrition, health and live enhancement, 2. We have to continue to learn how to take advantage of and successfully use the high technology of the Internet and the computer, 3. Realize the infinite and instant sources of information now available and 4. Help AHSU explore the unlimited possibilities to make the health knowledge gained available to everyone, a concept never possible in past centuries but a necessity in this century.

The goals of study in your profession are to: 1. Evaluate how best to raise individual health levels whatever they may be, 2. Have knowledge how to explore all possible health disciplines for pertinent health knowledge, 3. The skill to evaluate literature research and 5. The capability to summarize and present optimal combinations of strategies that best meet the needs of individuals in a timely manner.

Congratulations to the Pioneer Class of 1985 and members of those classes that followed and those who stayed involved. You have shown that the future of health care is more in supplying health knowledge to those seeking to become healthier than supplying services to those in need because of sickness and injuries.

It will be an Exciting Adventure!

January 1, 2009

So what have we in the CN® Certified Nutritionist community accomplished in America since we began in 1979, thirty-years ago?

Basically we have provided leadership in raising the issue of the value of nutrition, health and life enhancement as a vital component of America’s health care system.

Our new president has included Health Care as one of the three or four most important items to deal with when he takes office   January 2009.

Incidentally one of the other top issues on his agenda is repairing the economic system. I don’t think that you can talk about economics without talking about health care and visa versa.

Further, education is a thorny issue that needs some serious consideration. Talking about health care without talking about the need to educate by changing attitudes in regard to who is responsible for what.

I think “Health” should be #1, not diagnosing or prescribing for disease but teaching ways to raise health levels where ever they may be. If we are a healthy country we can deal much better with all that the future holds in store for us.

In any event we will have things to do. Our final mission will be accomplished in 2010 when the Health Knowledge Provider Profession has been established and is functioning.

A typical Health Knowledge Provider (HKP) will be a graduate of the CN® Certified Nutritionist program or something similar and will have accumulated new  knowledge and experience. His/Her job will be to establish the concept of raising-health levels whatever they may be by focusing on changing attitudes about health responsibilities up and down the line and across the board.

His/Her range of overall duties and responsibilities, because of the high tech-immediate and infinite information and unlimited possibilities age we live in this century is beyond the imagination of today’s health care concepts.

You know where we are going. Now, how about a few lines about   where we have been.

Being first is a good sign of leadership. Other definitions include:

To lead: 1. to go before or with to show the way, conduct or escort 2. to conduct or change a particular course. 3. To conduct or bring about a certain action or a particular course.

To provide leadership=1. The position or function of a leader 2. Having the ability to lead, 3. an act or instance of leading, guiding or directing,

Our goal is to convince the public the value if the combination of nutrition, health, life enhancement, education and changing attitudes at the individual level is the best way to raise health levels in America.

The culture of resistance to our mission has been extremely challenging and at times downright overwhelming but we have prevailed.

Our record includes a list of leadership activities conducted thorough the National Institute of Nutritional Education (NINE), American Health Science University (AHSU) and the Institute of American Health and Science (IAHS) since 1979.

  1. Requested and received $50,000 from health food stores across the country to be used for start-up funding for a professional education program in the industry in 1980. The Initial petition was requested by Dr. James R. Johnston, a health food store owner and member of (SOHO –Southern Health Organization) one of seven organizations covering the United States at a National Nutritional Foods Association (NNFA) Board Meeting in Las Vegas in 1979.
  2. Received funding of $250,000 from various industry manufacturers, producers and suppliers.  CN Certified Nutritionists scholarships were given out to some 500 health food store  owners, managers and staff members across the country.
  3. We were the FIRST nonprofit professional education classes in the natural foods industry beginning in 1985.
  4. We graduated our FIRST class June 15, 1985 In Orlando, FL.
  5. Our FIRST class Valedictorian was Lou Vasquez CN, Joint-Owner with Wife Pat (who became president of the NNFA in later years) of a health food store in Denver, Colorado
  6. We established a professional organization for CN® Certified Nutritionists, The Society of Certified Nutritionist (SCN) in 1985. The first president was Dave Ajay a former president of the NNFA. Later the SCN was opened up to include nutritionists other than CN Certified Nutritionists under the title of the National Association of Professional Nutritionists (NAPN).
  7. We established a CN Code of Ethics to be reviewed and signed each year in order to develop a professional status for Licensed CN Certified Nutritionists.
  8. Our CN Certified Nutritionist credential is the only one in our field registered with the U.S. Patent Office. The patent is good through 2017 when it will be renewed.
  9. We established the FIRST professional credentialed program using distance education as the delivery system. The operative word is professional.
  10. We were the FIRST to develop distance education Intern/Externships.
  11. We were the FIRST to develop proctored examinations on a national basis.
  12. We were the FIRST to develop professional continuing education programs (PCEP) annually.

  13. The NINE (National Institute or Nutritional Education) was the FIRST in the industry to become nationally Accredited.

  14. NINE was the FIRST entity to provide Professional Liability Insurance to the CN Certified Nutritionist community.

  15. NINE was the FIRST to have its courses approved by the American Council on Education (ACE) for college transfer credits.

  16.   NINE was the FIRST to develop a distance education Masters program in Nutrition Science and get it nationally accredited.

  17. Institute of American Health and Science was the FIRST to develop Documentation, Coding and Billing distance education courses for third-party reimbursements including teleseminars for the 3-4 million members of the integrative health care communities including the CN® Certified Nutritionist community.

  18.   We were the FIRST to establish a program broadening the CN Certified Nutritionist’s concept knowledge so as to provide a new creditable health profession by 2011-the Health Knowledge Provider.

Stick with us to find out what more we have in mind and how we will make it happen.
